Public Transportation in Linköping
When living as a student in Linköping, there is one essential thing to buy – a bike. Everyone travels by bike around here! To/from university, parties, grocery shopping, trips, you name it. It’s quite easy to get hold of a bike once here in Linköping, there are many second hand bike shops and people also put up plenty of ads on for example Facebook.
Before you get a bike though, and for those occasions when using a bike is not possible, there is a public transportation system consisting of buses operated by Östgötatrafiken. It’s no longer possible to pay by cash on them, but you can buy a bus card or ticket in any of Östgötafiken's sales agents, such as the central station, or in Quickomats. It is also possible to buy tickets using the app(android/apple), but that is more expensive in the long run. You can also buy commuter train tickets or card on board of Östgötatrafiken's trains. Östgötatrafiken's card can be used on board both their trains and buses, as well as on the trams in Norrköping.
There is also a bus line operated by LiU between Linköping and Norrköping. It is called Campusbussen and it is free to ride for all students. Note that you will need your LiU-card to go on it. You can read more about it and see the timetable here.
From Linköping Airport:
There are no good bus connections immediately from the Airport, but the airport is located close to Linköping city centre. You can find more information here. The easiest way is to take a taxi, but keep in mind that taxis are expensive in Sweden.
From Arlanda Airport:
In order to get to Linköping from Arlanda you first have to get from Arlanda into Stockholm Central station, the most convenient way to do this is to get on the Arlanda Express train which runs between Arlanda and the central station without any stops. It takes about 20-30 minutes and costs is roughly 150-200 SEK. You could also use the Airport transfer buses which takes about 45 minutes and costs about 100 SEK. Both of these options are easy to find at the airport and you can buy your ticket by cash or credit card at the airport, but you can also buy a ticket in advance on www.arlandaexpress.se or www.flygbussarna.se.
Once you’ve arrived at Stockholm Central Station you need to get a ticket for the trip Stockholm – Linköping. You can choose between train or bus, the train is more expensive and the price varies a lot depending on if you buy it in advance online (www.sj.se) or at the spot, but roughly between 250-500 SEK single trip. The trip takes about 1.5-2 hours but the number of departures is quite limited after 5pm. The bus takes longer, almost 3 hours, but is cheaper (around 200 SEK) and runs more frequently during night. There are two bus companies with whom you can book your ticket, www.swebusexpress.se and www.nettbuss.se. In both cases it is recommended to book a ticket in advance, since the buses often fill up.
From Skavsta Airport:
If you fly with Ryanair you’ll probably arrive at Skavsta Airport, which is located between Norrköping and Stockholm. Skavsta is quite a bit closer to Linköping compared to Arlanda. There are Airport Coaches which run between Skavsta and Linköping, you can book a ticket on www.flygbussarna.se.
